Verifying Pharmacy Licenses and Accreditation

Check the College of Pharmacists website for your province or territory. Each province maintains a register of licensed pharmacies and pharmacists. Simply search the database using the online pharmacy’s name or license number (if provided).

Look for a clear display of licensing information on the pharmacy’s website. Legitimate online pharmacies prominently feature their license number and associated regulatory body. Verify this information against the provincial register.

Examine the pharmacy’s accreditation. While not all Canadian online pharmacies hold specific accreditation beyond provincial licensing, seek out those with certifications like the Canadian International Pharmacy Association (CIPA) certification. CIPA members adhere to strict standards of practice and patient safety.

Contact the pharmacy directly. Ask for their license number and the name of the regulatory body overseeing them. A reputable pharmacy will readily provide this information. A hesitant response should raise concerns.

Use caution with pharmacies operating outside Canada. Canadian licensing doesn’t extend to international operations. While some international pharmacies may legitimately fill prescriptions for Canadians, verifying their legitimacy requires extra diligence.

Report suspicious pharmacies. If you encounter a pharmacy you believe is operating illegally or unethically, report your concerns to your provincial College of Pharmacists.
