Understanding Sildenafil Citrate

Sildenafil citrate is a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, facilitating an erection. This action is triggered by sexual stimulation; sildenafil doesn’t cause erections without it.

How Sildenafil Citrate Works

Sexual stimulation releases nitric oxide, a molecule that relaxes blood vessels. PDE5 normally breaks down this nitric oxide, limiting blood flow. Sildenafil inhibits PDE5, allowing nitric oxide to remain active for longer, resulting in increased blood flow to the penis.

Dosage and Administration

The typical starting dose is 50mg, taken as needed, about an hour before sexual activity. Your doctor may adjust the dosage based on your response and individual health needs. Never exceed the recommended dose.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include headaches, flushing, nasal congestion, and visual disturbances. More serious, though rare, side effects include prolonged erections (priapism) and sudden vision loss. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any concerning side effects.

Drug Interactions

Sildenafil can interact with certain medications, particularly nitrates. Combining them can dangerously lower blood pressure. Inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking before using sildenafil.

Precautions

Sildenafil is not suitable for everyone. Men with heart problems, low blood pressure, or certain eye conditions should discuss its use with their doctor. It’s also unsuitable for individuals taking nitrates. Always follow your doctor’s instructions.
