Treating Ear Infections in Children

Amoxicillin/clavulanate is often prescribed for children’s ear infections (otitis media). Dosage depends on the child’s weight and age. Always follow your doctor’s instructions precisely. Never adjust the dosage yourself.

Understanding the Dosage

Your doctor will calculate the correct amount based on your child’s weight. Typical dosages range from 20 to 40 mg/kg per day, divided into two doses. For example, a 20 kg child might receive 400 mg twice daily. The medication usually comes in liquid form for easy administration. Administer medication with food to minimize stomach upset.

Monitoring Your Child

Watch for improvement in your child’s symptoms, including reduced ear pain and fever. If symptoms worsen or don’t improve within a few days, contact your pediatrician immediately. Complete the entire course of antibiotics, even if your child feels better sooner. This prevents the infection from returning.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Less frequently, allergic reactions can occur, ranging from mild rash to severe anaphylaxis. Seek immediate medical attention if your child experiences any signs of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or throat.
