Always apply a small amount of Retin-A 0.1% cream to a small area of skin first to check for any adverse reactions. Begin with a pea-sized amount and apply every other night. Observe for irritation, redness, or burning. Gradually increase frequency as tolerated.
Sun Sensitivity
Retin-A increases sun sensitivity. Daily sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is mandatory. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, especially between 10 am and 4 pm. Wear protective clothing and seek shade when possible.
Skin Irritation
Expect some initial dryness, redness, or peeling. This usually subsides after a few weeks of consistent use. If irritation persists or worsens, reduce application frequency or temporarily discontinue use. Consult your dermatologist for guidance.
Other Precautions
- Avoid using other harsh skincare products concurrently, such as abrasive scrubs or strong chemical peels. These can exacerbate irritation. Don’t apply Retin-A to broken or irritated skin. Wait until the skin has healed completely before resuming use. Avoid contact with eyes, lips, and mucous membranes. Rinse thoroughly with water if accidental contact occurs. Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Contraindications
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Consult your doctor before using Retin-A if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Eczema or rosacea: Retin-A may worsen these conditions. Known allergy to tretinoin or any ingredients in the cream: Avoid use if you have a known allergy. Active cold sores: Avoid application to areas with cold sores.
When to Consult a Dermatologist
Schedule an appointment with your dermatologist if you experience severe skin irritation, persistent burning, or unusual reactions. They can adjust your treatment plan as needed.
