Doxycycline, while generally well-tolerated, can cause side effects. Common ones include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and heartburn. These usually are mild and resolve without treatment. However, more serious, though rare, reactions can occur.
Photosensitivity is a significant concern. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and use sunscreen with a high SPF while taking doxycycline. This reduces the risk of sunburn and skin reactions.
Yeast infections are another potential side effect, especially in women. Observe for symptoms like vaginal itching or discharge. Contact your doctor if you experience these.
Doxycycline can affect the effectiveness of birth control pills. Consider using alternative contraception methods during treatment and for at least a month after finishing the course.
Before starting doxycycline, inform your doctor about any existing health conditions, particularly liver or kidney problems, or allergies to tetracyclines. Pregnancy and breastfeeding should also be disclosed as doxycycline use during pregnancy is generally avoided.
Always follow your doctor’s prescribed dosage and duration of treatment. Do not stop taking the medication prematurely, even if symptoms improve, to ensure complete eradication of the infection. Report any unusual or worsening symptoms immediately.
