Potential Side Effects and Precautions

Amoxicillin, while generally safe, can cause side effects. Common reactions include diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. These are usually mild and resolve without treatment. However, if diarrhea is severe or persistent, contact your doctor immediately, as it could indicate a serious condition like *Clostridium difficile* infection.

Less common but more serious side effects include allergic reactions. These can range from skin rashes to life-threatening anaphylaxis. Stop taking amoxicillin and seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms like hives, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or dizziness.

Amoxicillin can interact with certain medications. Inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking before starting amoxicillin. This includes birth control pills, anticoagulants, and methotrexate, as amoxicillin may affect their efficacy.

If you have a history of allergies, particularly penicillin allergies, discuss this with your doctor before taking amoxicillin. Individuals with kidney or liver problems should also inform their physician, as dosage adjustments may be necessary.

During treatment, drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and maintain good kidney function. Monitor for any unusual symptoms and report them to your doctor. While rare, serious side effects are possible and require prompt medical attention.
