Bactrim DS can cause side effects, some common, others less so. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, and stomach upset. These usually resolve without intervention. Less common but potentially serious reactions involve allergic reactions, ranging from rash to severe, life-threatening anaphylaxis. If you experience any allergic reaction, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention.
Kidney problems can occur, especially in patients with pre-existing kidney issues or dehydration. Therefore, drink plenty of fluids while on Bactrim DS. Your doctor may monitor your kidney function with blood tests.
Bactrim DS can affect blood cell production. Symptoms might include unusual bleeding or bruising, fatigue, or fever. Inform your doctor if you notice these.
Before starting Bactrim DS, inform your doctor about all medications you’re taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Interactions are possible. Pregnancy and breastfeeding should also be discussed; Bactrim DS may not be appropriate in these situations.
Monitor yourself for any unusual symptoms. Contact your doctor if side effects worsen or persist. Open communication with your healthcare provider ensures safe and effective treatment.
