Generic Nexium, like its brand-name counterpart, can cause side effects. Common ones include headache, diarrhea, and nausea. Less frequent, but still possible, are stomach pain and constipation.
Rare but Serious Side Effects
In rare cases, more serious side effects may occur. These include bone fractures, especially with long-term use. Also, C. difficile-associated diarrhea, a serious bacterial infection, is a potential risk. Kidney problems have also been reported. If you experience any unusual or severe symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.
Interactions and Precautions
Nexium interacts with certain medications, such as warfarin (a blood thinner) and clopidogrel (a blood platelet inhibitor). Your doctor should be aware of all medications you take before prescribing Nexium. If you have kidney or liver problems, or a history of bone fractures, discuss these with your doctor before starting treatment. Pregnancy and breastfeeding should also be considered, as Nexium’s effects on the developing fetus and nursing infant are not fully understood. Always follow your doctor’s instructions and do not exceed the recommended dosage.
