For chlamydia, azithromycin generally demonstrates higher cure rates, often exceeding 90% for uncomplicated infections. However, even with chlamydia, resistance is emerging, prompting a need for ongoing surveillance and treatment guideline updates.
Limitations extend beyond resistance. Azithromycin’s single-dose regimen, while convenient, can result in lower drug levels compared to longer courses, potentially decreasing its effectiveness and increasing the risk of treatment failure. Moreover, patient adherence is critical; incomplete treatment significantly impacts cure rates for both infections.
Current guidelines generally recommend alternative antibiotics (like ceftriaxone for gonorrhea and doxycycline for chlamydia) either alone or in combination, primarily due to the growing concern of azithromycin resistance.
