Metronidazole and tinidazole are the primary treatments for trichomoniasis. A single 2-gram oral dose of metronidazole is highly effective. Alternatively, a 7-day course of 500mg twice daily is also an option.
Metronidazole: Dosage and Considerations
- Follow your doctor’s instructions precisely regarding dosage and duration. Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment and for at least 24 hours afterward, as this can cause severe nausea and vomiting. Potential side effects include nausea, metallic taste, and headache. These are generally mild and transient. Metronidazole is generally safe during pregnancy, however consult your doctor for advice and to discuss alternative options if necessary.
Tinidazole: Dosage and Considerations
- Tinidazole is typically administered as a single 2-gram oral dose. Similar to metronidazole, alcohol should be avoided during treatment and for at least 24-72 hours afterwards. Side effects can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and a metallic taste. Consult your doctor before taking tinidazole if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Both medications require your sexual partner(s) to be treated simultaneously to prevent reinfection. If symptoms persist or recur after treatment, contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Complete the full course of prescribed medication, even if you feel better before finishing. Practice safe sex, including consistent condom use, to reduce the risk of future infections. Regular testing, especially if you have multiple partners, helps detect and treat trichomoniasis early.
