Common Side Effects and Interactions

Cephalexin, like many antibiotics, can cause side effects. The most frequent include diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. These usually are mild and resolve without treatment. Less common, but still possible, are stomach pain and heartburn. If these become severe or persistent, contact your doctor.

A less frequent, but serious, side effect is Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD). CDAD is caused by an imbalance in gut bacteria. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.

Allergic reactions, although rare, can range from mild skin rashes to severe anaphylaxis. Signs of a serious allergic reaction include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, and hives. If you experience these, seek immediate emergency care.

Cephalexin can interact with certain medications. Concurrent use with anticoagulants like warfarin may increase bleeding risk. It can also affect the effectiveness of some oral contraceptives. Inform your doctor of all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

Kidney problems may require dose adjustments. Your doctor will assess your kidney function before prescribing cephalexin to determine the appropriate dose for your individual needs. Proper hydration is recommended while taking this medication.
