Bacteria Sensitive to Augmentin

Augmentin, a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, effectively targets a wide range of bacteria. Gram-positive bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae (responsible for pneumonia and ear infections), Streptococcus pyogenes (strep throat), and Staphylococcus aureus (skin infections, pneumonia) are typically sensitive. However, resistance is growing, so laboratory testing confirms susceptibility before treatment.

Gram-negative bacteria also fall under Augmentin’s scope. Haemophilus influenzae (ear infections, sinusitis), Moraxella catarrhalis (respiratory infections), and some strains of Escherichia coli (urinary tract infections) usually respond well. Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, known for antibiotic resistance, may not be affected.

Anaerobic bacteria, thriving in oxygen-free environments, such as Bacteroides fragilis (abdominal infections), also show sensitivity to Augmentin, though this varies with specific strains.
