Augmentin, a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, combats bacterial infections by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Amoxicillin targets bacteria directly, while clavulanate protects amoxicillin from inactivation by beta-lactamase enzymes, produced by certain bacteria.
Take Augmentin exactly as prescribed. Dosage depends on your age, weight, and the severity of your infection. Never adjust the dosage yourself.
- Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. These usually are mild and resolve quickly. Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) are rare but serious. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience swelling of your face, lips, or tongue; difficulty breathing; or hives. Interactions with other medications are possible. Inform your doctor about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, you are taking.
Complete the entire course of Augmentin, even if you feel better before finishing. Stopping early can lead to treatment failure and the development of antibiotic resistance.
Storage: Store Augmentin at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Missed dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. Never double up doses. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Discuss use with your doctor, as Augmentin may be suitable with precautions during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
