Adverse Effects: Common and Serious Side Effects

Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (SXT) generally causes mild side effects, but serious reactions can occur. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. These usually resolve without intervention, but persistent or severe symptoms warrant medical attention. Drink plenty of water to help prevent these issues.

Common Side Effects:

Skin reactions like rash are relatively frequent. A less common but notable reaction is photosensitivity; avoid excessive sun exposure while taking SXT. Headache and dizziness are also reported, usually mild and transient. Changes in taste or metallic taste in the mouth can occur.

Serious Side Effects:

Though rare, severe allergic reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, are potentially life-threatening and require immediate medical care. Symptoms might include widespread skin blistering and peeling. Blood disorders, such as agranulocytosis (low white blood cell count) and thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), are serious concerns. Monitor for signs of infection (fever, sore throat) or unusual bleeding or bruising. Liver damage, indicated by jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), is another possibility. Kidney problems, including kidney failure, are also possible, especially in patients with pre-existing kidney disease. Report any significant changes in urine output or color immediately.
