Advair: Dosage Forms and Administration

Advair Diskus comes as a dry powder inhaler. It’s crucial to use it correctly for optimal results.

Using the Advair Diskus

Hold the inhaler with the mouthpiece away from you. Turn the lever on the side of the device until you hear a click. Breathe out completely. Bring the mouthpiece to your mouth, and close your lips tightly around it. Inhale forcefully and deeply. You should feel the medication entering your lungs. Hold your breath for at least 10 seconds. Rinse your mouth with water after each use to reduce the risk of thrush (a fungal infection).

Your doctor will determine the correct dose and frequency. Commonly prescribed doses include 100/50 mcg, 250/50 mcg, or 500/50 mcg, twice daily. Always follow your doctor’s instructions precisely.

Important Considerations

Never swallow the medication. It must be inhaled. If you experience any unexpected side effects, such as increased wheezing, contact your doctor immediately. Do not share your inhaler with anyone else. Store your inhaler as directed on the label, away from heat and moisture. Check the expiration date on your inhaler regularly. Discard expired inhalers properly.

Advair HFA is also available as a metered-dose inhaler. The administration is different and your doctor or pharmacist should give you specific instructions for this form of the medication.
