What is Non-Gonococcal Urethritis (NGU)?

NGU is an infection of the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of your body. Unlike gonorrhea, it’s caused by various bacteria, most commonly Chlamydia trachomatis.

Symptoms of NGU

Many men experience no symptoms. However, common signs include burning during urination, a discharge from the penis (which may be clear, white, or yellowish), and a mild itching or irritation at the urethral opening. If you suspect NGU, seek medical attention.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Doctors diagnose NGU through a urine test or by examining a sample of urethral discharge. Antibiotics, such as doxycycline, effectively treat most NGU cases. Always complete the entire course of antibiotics prescribed by your doctor, even if symptoms improve.

Prevention

Practicing safe sex, including consistent condom use, significantly reduces your risk of contracting NGU. Regular STI testing, especially if you’re sexually active, is also recommended. Early diagnosis and treatment prevent complications.
