Understanding PCOS and its Symptoms

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects hormone balance, leading to various symptoms. Recognizing these is key to seeking help.

Irregular periods are a common sign. You might experience long intervals between periods, very short cycles, or no periods at all. This irregularity stems from hormonal imbalances affecting ovulation.

Missed periods: A period missed for three months or more is a significant indicator. Infrequent periods: Cycles exceeding 35 days are considered irregular. Heavy bleeding: Prolonged or excessively heavy menstrual flow should also be investigated.

Beyond menstrual issues, PCOS often manifests in other ways:

Acne: Excess androgens can trigger breakouts. Excess hair growth (hirsutism): Noticeable hair growth on the face, chest, or back suggests hormonal imbalance. Weight gain: Difficulty losing weight or unexplained weight gain frequently accompanies PCOS. Thinning hair: Hair loss on the scalp can occur. Darkening skin: Areas like armpits, neck, or inner thighs might darken.

PCOS can also impact fertility. The hormonal disruption hinders regular ovulation, making conception more challenging.

Infertility: Difficulty getting pregnant is a serious consequence. Miscarriages: PCOS increases the risk of pregnancy loss.

If you experience several of these symptoms, consult your doctor. Early diagnosis and management can significantly improve your health and well-being.
