Precautions and Contraindications for Cardizem Bolus Administration

Always monitor blood pressure and heart rate continuously during and after Cardizem bolus administration. A significant drop in blood pressure or bradycardia requires immediate intervention, potentially including discontinuation of the drug and supportive measures.

Specific Patient Populations

Exercise extreme caution in patients with sick sinus syndrome, second – or third-degree atrioventricular block (unless a pacemaker is in place), severe left ventricular dysfunction, or hypotension. Avoid Cardizem in patients with known hypersensitivity to dihydropyridines or other calcium channel blockers. Adjust dosage carefully in patients with hepatic or renal impairment; reduced doses may be necessary to prevent accumulation.

Drug Interactions

Be aware of potential interactions with other medications, particularly those that also lower blood pressure or heart rate, such as beta-blockers, digoxin, and certain antiarrhythmics. Concomitant use requires close monitoring and potential dosage adjustments. Inform patients about potential drug interactions before initiating treatment.

Post-Administration Monitoring

After bolus administration, carefully observe the patient for several hours to detect any adverse reactions such as hypotension, bradycardia, nausea, headache, or dizziness. Provide appropriate treatment for any arising adverse effects. Patient education about potential side effects and necessary precautions is key.
