Lasix, a potent diuretic, carries risks. Monitor for dehydration, indicated by decreased urine output, dry mouth, dizziness, and low blood pressure. Electrolyte imbalances, particularly hypokalemia (low potassium), are common. Symptoms include muscle weakness, fatigue, and irregular heartbeat. Regularly check potassium levels.
Ototoxicity (hearing damage) is a rare but serious complication, especially with rapid IV administration. Report any hearing changes immediately. Hypotension (low blood pressure) can occur, especially in patients with pre-existing conditions. Monitor blood pressure frequently, particularly after administration.
Patients with impaired kidney function are at increased risk for complications. Kidney function should be closely monitored with blood tests. Allergic reactions, though uncommon, can range from mild rash to severe anaphylaxis. Be prepared to manage allergic reactions appropriately.
| Dehydration | Decreased urine output, dry mouth, dizziness, low blood pressure | Fluid replacement, monitor electrolytes |
| Hypokalemia | Muscle weakness, fatigue, irregular heartbeat | Potassium supplements, monitor potassium levels |
| Ototoxicity | Hearing loss, tinnitus | Discontinue Lasix, monitor hearing |
| Hypotension | Low blood pressure, dizziness, lightheadedness | Adjust Lasix dose, monitor blood pressure |
| Allergic Reaction | Rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing | Discontinue Lasix, administer appropriate treatment |
Always closely observe patients receiving Lasix for any signs of these or other adverse effects. Adjust dosage as needed, under the supervision of a physician.
