Overdose and Emergency Information: What to Do

Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately. Do not wait to see if symptoms improve.

Immediate Actions

If you suspect an ibuprofen overdose, act quickly. Time is critical. Clearly describe the situation to emergency services: state the amount of ibuprofen ingested and when it occurred. Follow any instructions given by the dispatcher. If possible, have the ibuprofen container available to provide details to the emergency responders.

Symptoms of Ibuprofen Overdose

While symptoms vary depending on the amount ingested, be aware of:

Nausea and vomiting Stomach pain Diarrhea Drowsiness or dizziness Rapid breathing High blood pressure Confusion Seizures Loss of consciousness

The presence of any of these symptoms, especially several at once, requires immediate medical attention.

After Emergency Services Arrive

Cooperate fully with paramedics and hospital staff. Answer their questions honestly and completely to aid in proper diagnosis and treatment. Provide a complete list of medications you are currently taking.

Prevention

Always follow the dosage instructions on the ibuprofen label. Never exceed the recommended dose. Store ibuprofen out of reach of children.
