Metronidazole (Flagyl) for Colitis: Mechanism of Action

Metronidazole targets anaerobic bacteria and some protozoa causing colitis. It enters bacterial cells and interferes with their DNA. Specifically, it inhibits DNA synthesis by binding to DNA and disrupting its structure.

This disruption leads to impaired bacterial growth and ultimately, bacterial death. The drug’s effectiveness stems from its ability to selectively target anaerobic organisms, which thrive in the low-oxygen environment of the colon, making it a useful treatment for colitis caused by these pathogens.

Note that metronidazole’s mechanism doesn’t directly address the inflammatory aspect of colitis. It focuses solely on eradicating the infection. Therefore, it often works best in conjunction with other medications that tackle inflammation.

The specific bacterial species affected vary, but common targets in colitis include Clostridium difficile and certain other anaerobic bacteria. Always consult a physician for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
