Mechanism of Action: How Each Antibiotic Works

Doxycycline targets bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing the addition of amino acids to the growing polypeptide chain, thus halting bacterial growth. This inhibition effectively stops bacterial replication.

Amoxicillin, a penicillin-derivative, inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. It does this by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), enzymes crucial for the formation of peptidoglycan, a major component of the bacterial cell wall. Interference with PBPs weakens the cell wall, ultimately leading to bacterial lysis and death.

Penicillin also works by disrupting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Similar to amoxicillin, it binds to PBPs, preventing the cross-linking of peptidoglycan strands. This results in a weakened cell wall, making the bacteria susceptible to osmotic lysis.
