Lasix 80 mg IV Push: Recognizing and Managing Adverse Effects

Monitor patients closely for hypotension. A rapid drop in blood pressure can occur; administer Lasix slowly over at least 1-2 minutes. If hypotension develops, place the patient in a supine position and consider fluid resuscitation with isotonic saline.

Hypokalemia is a common adverse effect. Regularly assess serum potassium levels, especially in patients at risk (e. g., those on digoxin or with heart failure). Potassium supplementation may be necessary; discuss this with your physician.

Observe for signs of dehydration, including decreased urine output, dry mucous membranes, and thirst. Adequate hydration is key; encourage fluid intake unless contraindicated.

Ototoxicity is possible, particularly with high doses or impaired renal function. Monitor for tinnitus, hearing loss, or vertigo. Discontinue Lasix if these symptoms appear and inform the physician immediately.

Assess for electrolyte imbalances beyond hypokalemia. Hyponatremia, hypomagnesemia, and hypochloremia can also occur. Regular electrolyte monitoring helps guide appropriate management.

Be aware of potential allergic reactions, including rash, itching, or swelling. Stop the infusion immediately if an allergic reaction occurs and administer appropriate treatment (e. g., antihistamines, corticosteroids).

Note that hyperuricemia can occur, increasing the risk of gout. Monitor uric acid levels in patients with a history of gout. Allopurinol may be considered for prophylaxis or treatment.

Document all adverse effects and the interventions taken. This information is critical for ongoing patient care and risk management.
