Interactions with Other Medications and Substances

Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and substances you consume, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal remedies, and alcohol. This includes recreational drugs.

Zyprexa (olanzapine) can interact negatively with several substances. These interactions can either reduce Zyprexa’s effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects.

Alcohol: Combining Zyprexa and alcohol significantly increases the risk of drowsiness and dizziness. Avoid alcohol while taking Zyprexa. Central Nervous System Depressants: Drugs like benzodiazepines (e. g., diazepam, alprazolam), opioids (e. g., morphine, codeine), and other sedatives increase the risk of severe sedation and respiratory depression when taken with Zyprexa. Your doctor should carefully monitor your dosage if you need to use these medications concurrently. Certain Antidepressants: Some antidepressants, particularly those that increase serotonin levels, can interact with Zyprexa, potentially increasing the risk of serotonin syndrome, a serious condition with symptoms like agitation, confusion, and rapid heart rate. Discuss all antidepressants with your doctor before starting or stopping them while taking Zyprexa. Medications Metabolized by the Liver: Zyprexa is primarily metabolized by the liver. Co-administration with other medications that also use the same liver enzymes (CYP1A2, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4) may alter the levels of either drug in your blood, potentially leading to increased side effects or reduced efficacy. Your doctor needs to assess this thoroughly.

This list is not exhaustive. Always consult with your physician or pharmacist before taking any new medication or supplement while you are taking Zyprexa. They can assess potential interactions and adjust your treatment plan accordingly to minimize risks and ensure your safety and treatment efficacy.

Never start or stop taking any medications without consulting your doctor. Bring a complete list of all your medications, supplements, and substances to every doctor’s appointment. Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor immediately.
