How to Prepare Haldol for IV Administration

Always use sterile technique. Begin by verifying the Haldol (haloperidol) prescription and patient details. Check for any allergies or contraindications.

Gather necessary supplies: Haldol vial, sterile IV bag (e. g., 0.9% NaCl or D5W, compatible with Haldol), sterile syringe and needle appropriate for the Haldol concentration, alcohol swabs, and gloves. Clean the Haldol vial top with an alcohol swab. Allow it to air dry. Using the appropriate sterile syringe and needle, draw up the prescribed amount of diluent (usually sterile water for injection or 0.9% sodium chloride). The volume will depend on the concentration needed and the vial’s Haldol content. Consult the drug package insert for correct dilution guidelines. Insert the needle into the Haldol vial, injecting the diluent. Gently swirl the vial to fully dissolve the Haldol. Do not shake vigorously. Withdraw the prepared Haldol solution from the vial using the same syringe. Attach the syringe to the IV bag using a sterile needle and transfer the Haldol solution into the bag. Gently mix the Haldol solution within the IV bag by inverting the bag several times. Inspect the solution for any particulate matter or discoloration. Discard the solution if it shows any abnormality. Clearly label the bag with the patient’s name, date, time, medication, concentration and total volume.

Always follow your institution’s protocols and guidelines regarding medication preparation and administration.

Always double-check calculations before preparing and administering the medication. Dispose of used needles and syringes properly. Monitor the patient closely for adverse reactions following administration.
