Renal function significantly impacts prednisolone elimination. Impaired renal function prolongs the half-life and increases the risk of drug accumulation. Patients with severe kidney disease require dosage adjustments. Liver function also plays a crucial role, as the liver metabolizes prednisolone. Liver dysfunction can slow metabolism and lead to higher prednisolone levels in the blood. Age and individual variations in metabolism also affect excretion rates. Elderly patients often show decreased clearance compared to younger individuals.

Unchanged Prednisolone in Urine

A small percentage (less than 10%) of prednisolone is excreted unchanged in the urine. This fraction varies depending on factors like renal function and overall metabolism. Monitoring both the total amount of metabolites and the proportion of unchanged prednisolone can help assess the effectiveness of drug elimination.
