Lasix, or furosemide, interacts with several medications. Concurrent use with aminoglycoside antibiotics (like gentamicin or tobramycin) increases the risk of ototoxicity (hearing damage). Monitor hearing regularly if taking both.
Lithium levels rise when combined with Lasix, increasing the risk of lithium toxicity. Closely monitor lithium levels during concurrent therapy. Adjust lithium dosage as needed, based on your doctor’s guidance.
Drugs Affecting Potassium Levels
Lasix promotes potassium loss. Taking it with other potassium-wasting drugs like corticosteroids or amphotericin B significantly increases this risk, potentially causing hypokalemia (low potassium). Your doctor may prescribe a potassium supplement to counter this.
Other Important Interactions
Digoxin toxicity risk increases with Lasix due to decreased potassium levels. Regular monitoring of digoxin levels is important. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can reduce Lasix’s effectiveness. Your physician should carefully consider this if you’re taking both. Always inform your doctor of all medications you take, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
