Drug Interactions: What to Avoid

Doxycycline can interact negatively with several medications. Always inform your doctor of all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking.

Antacids: Avoid taking doxycycline with antacids containing calcium, magnesium, aluminum, or iron. These can reduce doxycycline’s absorption. Dairy products: Milk, yogurt, and cheese can also decrease doxycycline absorption. Take your dose at least two hours before or after consuming dairy. Oral contraceptives: Doxycycline may reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. Consider alternative contraception methods while on this antibiotic. Warfarin (Coumadin): Doxycycline can increase the effects of warfarin, leading to increased bleeding risk. Close monitoring of your INR (International Normalized Ratio) is necessary. Methotrexate: Concurrent use can increase the toxicity of methotrexate.

Certain medications may increase the risk of side effects. These include:

Isotretinoin (Accutane): Increased risk of intracranial hypertension. NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs): Increased risk of esophageal ulcers.

This list is not exhaustive; other interactions are possible. Consult your physician or pharmacist for a complete list and personalized advice. Always disclose all your medications to healthcare professionals to ensure your safety.
