Dosage and Administration of Doxycycline for Malaria Prevention

For malaria prevention, adults typically take 100 mg of doxycycline orally once daily, beginning 1-2 days before entering a malaria-risk area. Continue this daily dose throughout your stay and for four weeks after leaving the area.

Children require a different dosage. Consult your doctor to determine the appropriate dose for your child’s age and weight. They will provide specific instructions, as the dosage is based on body weight.

Take doxycycline with a full glass of water. Avoid taking it with dairy products or antacids, as these can reduce absorption. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. Don’t double up on doses.

Important Note: Doxycycline is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or children under eight years old. Alternative malaria prevention methods should be considered for these groups. Always discuss malaria prevention with your doctor before traveling to a malaria-risk area to determine the best approach for your individual needs.

Potential side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and photosensitivity. Consult your doctor if you experience any adverse reactions.
