Contraindications and precautions for Doxycycline use

Avoid doxycycline if you’re allergic to tetracyclines. This includes minocycline and tetracycline. Severe allergic reactions can occur.

Do not use doxycycline during pregnancy, especially during the last half. It can harm the developing fetus. Breastfeeding mothers should also avoid it, as doxycycline is excreted in breast milk.

Children under eight years old should not take doxycycline. It can permanently stain developing teeth.

Doxycycline can interact with several medications. Consult your doctor about potential interactions before taking doxycycline if you are already using any medications, especially those affecting the liver or kidneys. Some examples include: antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum; blood thinners (warfarin); and some antifungal medications.

Doxycycline can increase photosensitivity. Protect yourself from excessive sun exposure or use sunscreen with a high SPF while taking this medication. Avoid tanning beds.

Certain medical conditions may necessitate caution or prevent doxycycline use. Discuss your health history with your doctor, especially if you have: kidney or liver problems, systemic lupus erythematosus, myasthenia gravis, or esophageal disorders.

Condition Precaution
Kidney disease Dosage adjustment may be needed
Liver disease Close monitoring may be required
Esophageal problems Take doxycycline with plenty of water to avoid esophageal irritation

If you experience any unusual side effects, such as severe diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, or unusual bleeding, contact your doctor immediately.
