Amoxicillin, like all medications, can cause side effects. Most are mild and resolve without treatment. Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and a rash. These usually subside within a few days. However, some reactions require immediate medical attention.
Severe Allergic Reactions
Seek immediate medical help if you experience a severe allergic reaction. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, and hives. These are serious and need prompt treatment.
Other Reasons to Contact Your Doctor
While less common, contact your doctor if you experience:
| Persistent diarrhea | Diarrhea lasting more than a few days, or accompanied by blood or mucus. |
| Severe stomach pain | Intense abdominal pain that doesn’t improve with rest. |
| Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice) | Indicates liver problems; seek immediate medical advice. |
| Unusual bruising or bleeding | May indicate a blood clotting issue. |
| Dark urine | Another sign potentially indicating liver problems. |
Medication Interactions
Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. Some medications can interact negatively with amoxicillin.
