Common Side Effects and How to Manage Them

Amoxicillin, while generally safe, can cause some side effects. The most common is diarrhea. If your child experiences mild diarrhea, offer plenty of fluids like water or electrolyte solutions to prevent dehydration. For persistent or severe diarrhea, contact your doctor.

Skin rashes are another possibility. A mild rash may clear up on its own, but a severe or spreading rash requires immediate medical attention. Do not give your child any other medications without consulting your doctor first.

Nausea and vomiting are less frequent side effects. Small, frequent meals might help alleviate these. Avoid greasy or spicy foods. If vomiting persists, contact your doctor.

Less common, but still possible, are yeast infections (thrush) in the mouth or vagina. These often present as white patches. Your doctor can prescribe an antifungal medication to treat these.

Always monitor your child for any unusual symptoms while they’re taking amoxicillin. If you notice anything concerning, don’t hesitate to contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice. They can assess the situation and provide appropriate guidance.
