Common Side Effects and Adverse Reactions

Doxycycline and tetracycline, while effective antibiotics, can cause various side effects. Gastrointestinal upset, including nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting, is common. These issues often resolve with continued use, but contacting your doctor is advisable if symptoms are severe or persistent.

Sun sensitivity is another frequent side effect. Increased risk of sunburn necessitates using sunscreen with a high SPF and limiting sun exposure. Wearing protective clothing offers additional protection.

Yeast infections, particularly in women, are possible. These are caused by disruption of the natural vaginal flora. Symptoms include vaginal itching and discharge. Your doctor can prescribe appropriate antifungal treatment.

Less common, but still possible, are allergic reactions ranging from mild rashes to severe anaphylaxis. Symptoms like difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or throat require immediate medical attention.

Tooth discoloration in children and pregnant women is a known risk. Tetracycline can permanently stain developing teeth. Doxycycline is generally preferred for this demographic, but the best course of action remains professional medical guidance.

Finally, both medications can affect the liver. Unusual fatigue, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), or dark urine are all signs of potential liver problems requiring prompt medical evaluation.
