Cipro and Drug Interactions: Medications to Avoid

Avoid taking Ciprofloxacin with antacids containing magnesium or aluminum. These can reduce Cipro’s absorption, diminishing its effectiveness. Similarly, iron supplements and multivitamins containing iron interfere with Cipro absorption; separate their intake by at least 2 hours.

Blood Thinners and Cipro

Ciprofloxacin can increase the risk of bleeding when taken with blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin). Close monitoring of your blood clotting time (INR) is necessary if you use both medications. Your doctor should adjust your warfarin dose as needed.

Other Notable Interactions

Theophylline, a medication for lung conditions, can have its effects amplified when combined with Cipro. Monitor for increased side effects like tremors or palpitations. Furthermore, probenecid, a medication for gout, can reduce Cipro’s elimination from the body, potentially raising the risk of side effects. Caffeine’s effects may also be intensified by Cipro. Always inform your doctor and pharmacist of all medications you are taking before starting Cipro to avoid potentially dangerous interactions. This includes over-the-counter medications, herbal remedies, and supplements.
